Patsy and Maisie are sisters who have returned home after studying in town. Patsy is a teacher at the nearby school, while Maisie works in the post office with their mother Miss Sarah. Patsy is happy to be home and enjoys teaching, but Maisie is ready to leave again, this time her sights are set on England.
Word comes that “the Windy Rush” will be coming to the harbour on the way to England. Many of the the villagers, including Maisie are ready to get on board. They have great dreams of the opportunities which can be found in “Forrin” as told by Lionel, a tour guide, who has endless stories of how tourists live the good life.
Another villager determined to go is Boysie, a student at Patsy’s school. He is not very book-bright. His goal is to successfully stow-away on the next ship. He keeps Keys, the school’s handy man, busy with his antics. Keys is thought to have fought in the War in England. He is a mysterious man. He speaks in proverbs and parables, but his words and actions have meaning to those willing to listen.
Patsy has another reason to stay, she is friendly with Cliff a local farmer who is devoted to working the land. A romance is brewing between them. Maisie is not too happy that her sister would give up an opportunity to travel for a country boy.
Some villagers make it to London and soon find that things are not as rosy as they thought. There is good and bad in life overseas and the changes in Banana Grove are just as mixed. Some will decide to remain in England, some will return to Banana Grove… and there may be a wedding when all is said and done.
